Whites Tree Frogs Care Sheet
Whites Tree Frogs Care Sheet – This care sheet contains recommendations from our shop assistants.
General Care
Adults can reach up to 5 inches in length, but females are usually larger. Size is not a good way to determine the sexual orientation of these frogs. Males have a vocal sac and can have dark nuptial pads on the base of their thumbs. Although these may not be present in younger adults.
Whites tree frogs can live up to 20 years in captivity, but a more common age would be 7-10 years old. Tree frogs do not have any real defensive other than camouflage so their lifespan in the wild is significantly shorter.
Housing
Treefrogs are arboreal meaning they live above ground level. Taking this into consideration, treefrogs should be housed in taller enclosures. Plenty of foliage should be present within the enclosure to allow your frog places to climb. Decorations such as leaves, branches, and fake plants can be used. Adequate ventilation should be present at all times to prevent respiratory problems and allow heat to escape.
Whites tree frogs are sociable animals but avoid keeping younger frogs with older individuals as they may resort to cannibalism.
Mist the tank daily.
Lighting
5-6% UVB is essential for tree frogs to help with digestion and prevent MBD (Metabolic bone disease). A temperature of between 26-28c is required for White’s tree frogs, this can be achieved using a heat bulb connected to a thermostat. If the tank is warm enough with a bulb, you can place a heat mat on one side.
Feeding
Tree frogs will enjoy a variety of foods, including. Crickets, locus, waxworms, and mealworms. Ensure all feeder insects are gut loaded, this can be achieved by feeding veg to the crickets a few days before feeding to your frogs. All food should be coated with calcium to ensure your tree frogs are getting sufficient vitamins.
Substrate
The substrate within the enclosure should be fine particulate soil or coconut fibre. This substrate will retain moisture well and the small particle size will not impact your frogs’ gut if ingested accidentally.
Water
Water should be provided using a shallow water dish and cleaned daily. In the instance your frog defecates in the water dish, the water should be changed immediately. You should also provide your frog with water via misting, this should be done twice daily to ensure the correct moisture is retained within the enclosure. The water dish is there to provide your frog with additional water if they become dehydrated so may not always be used.
