How to handle your Uromastyx Lizard?
You may want to wear gloves when picking up your lizard as they have spiky tails and sharp claws. Uro’s prefer to have a stable surface to rest on so ensure they are placed in the palm of your hand appropriately. Carefully lift your lizard using both hands to support their body at a steady pace. The best time to pick your lizard up is when they are resting on the ground to avoid disturbance or stress. Never try to pick your Uro up whilst they are in hiding or consuming food- This may cause them to become frightened and urinate.
Where should your Uromastyx Lizard live?
Uromastyx are desert lizards originating from parts of North Africa and the East and Southern parts of Asia. Uro’s as most captivated reptiles are housed in an enclosed cage known as a vivarium. Ensure your enclosure has plenty of space for your lizard to move around freely. The Cage should be at least 4 times the length and two times to width of your Uro friend. Hides are a perfect place for lizards to chill, cool off and feel secure so ensure this is in the cage.
Substrate sand will create more of a natural habitat and allow your lizard to dig around. It’s important to change the sand one to every two weeks to get rid of waste and lingering bacteria. Uro’s need a heat/light source they can bask under to absorb calcium. Uro’s also need a cool part of the enclosure to prevent overheating.
Cage temperatures:
- Basking Temperature – 120 Fahrenheit
- Cool area- 80 to 100 Fahrenheit
- Night time temperature- 65-70 Fahrenheit
