African Common Toad Care Sheet
Housing
The common toad is an adaptable species, meaning they can live in a variety of habitats. An enclosure 100x50cm is sufficient for your toad, but the bigger the better. You should create as close to natural habitat as possible and should ensure your toad has enough substrate to burrow/dig. We recommend 40/50cm of soil.
Your toad will love to explore, dig, swim, and bask. Providing a small pool will help keep your toad happy. Common toads do not require additional heating supplements and can live happily at room temperature.
Feeding
These toads enjoy a varied diet consisting of crickets, locus, mealworms, and waxworms. It is important to gut load any food before feeding to ensure your toad gets the nutrients it needs from their food. Dusting feeder insects will maintain healthy levels of vitamins and calcium.
Hibernation
Captive common toads will not need to hibernate if they are kept indoors. Common toads are an adaptive species and therefore can be kept outdoors during the summer months. If housed outside a close eye should be kept on the outdoor temperature to ensure it does not go below 10c. The ideal temperature for the common toad is 23-25c.
