Hissing Cockroach Care Sheet
Housing
Hissing cockroaches can be housed in a variety of different enclosures, however the most suitable are plant propagators or faunariums. Cockroaches can climb glass and a lid is therefore essential. They are amiable creatures and therefore can be housed together or with other invertebrates for example: Millipedes, beetles, and other cockroach species.
Cockroaches thrive at warm temperatures between 20 – 25c. Warmth can be provided in many ways including a hat mat, a light bulb or by housing them in a heated propagator.
It is important to keep the enclosure dry. Cockroaches do not need moisture within there enclosure.
Feeding
Cockroaches are not fussy eaters; they are scavengers and therefore will eat pretty much anything. We recommend feeding them a diet of fruit, vegetables, and cereals. A shallow bowl of water can be provided but Is not essential. Cockroaches obtain enough moisture when fed the right diet.
Breeding
Although cockroaches hold a reputation of breeding fairly easily, this is not the case with the hissing cockroach. Hissing cockroaches may only breed when kept in a group, and do not lay eggs. Hissing cockroaches bear live young and incubate the egg casing within their body. The number of babies the hissing cockroach can produce varies but can produce up to 50 babies at once. The young are white and turn brown as they get older. Baby cockroaches eat the same as their adult counterparts and must remain still whilst their shell hardens. A baby will take about 9 months to mature into an adult.
