The Benefits of Caravanning With Dogs
Caravanning is a great way to bring a furry favourite on holiday with the rest of the family – after all, what’s not to love about a road trip with dogs followed by a lovely relaxation session in the countryside? Although your pup might be a bit anxious about travelling or sleeping in a new place, it’s a very rewarding experience if you can get them in on the fun!
Rather than spending on excessive airfare, dealing with long lines at the airport, and lugging heavy suitcases all over the place, consider the freedom of a holiday that’s completely in your control. Set off when you want and go wherever the road takes you – just don’t forget to bring the dog food!
Of course, there are a few things to bear in mind: the site you’re visiting must allow dogs, your dog will need to be acclimatised to the caravan/campervan/motorhome beforehand to prevent possible stress and anxiety, a long road journey might make them fussy or irritable, dogs should never be left unattended in a caravan/campervan/motorhome, and you’ll need to bring along anything that they’d need on a daily basis when at home (fresh & clean water, healthy food, a place to sleep, etc.).
In fact, here’s a list we’ve written up of all the things dog owners might forget before setting off on their caravanning journey:
- Water/food bowls, especially ones suited to car travel that don’t spill or overflow easily.
- A water bottle if a bowl isn’t always in reach.
- Seat covers that can be removed & washed.
- Dog travel harnesses.
- Tethers to keep your dog from wandering off.
- Installing a fan to deal with high temperatures.
- Hose and/or bucket for washing down dogs after a muddy walk.
- A bed/blanket.
But all of that is nothing compared to the thought of waking up on a warm summer’s morning surrounded by nothing but trees and nature for miles with a beloved animal companion. We’re getting all misty just thinking about it!
So go on – stretch those legs and paws and see what the outdoors has to offer.
