How to care for your Leopard Gecko
The best home you could give your new little friend is something low and something wooden. For a baby leopard gecko a 33 litre RUB (Really Useful Tub) with a heat mat underneath half of the tub making sure there is a warm side and cold side. Hides, 3 hides are needed for your leopard gecko, a warm side, a cool side and a humid hide, this is to ensure that the gecko is able to remove their shed without a struggle.
For an adult leopard gecko, a 2ft-3ft vivarium is the best possible set up you could provide, with lots of hiding places and lots of foliage such as plants, rocks and a water bowl big enough for them to fit in.
Substrate
For baby leopard gecko if you decide to keep it in a 33 litre RUB (Really Useful Tub) we would suggest paper towels as the best and safest substrate, as leopard geckos often lick their surroundings and any loose substrate can be eaten and is very bad for them.
If you have a 2-3ft set up for an adult, paper towels again or floor tiles can be used as they hold heat but also they are not loose so cannot, therefore, be digested. If neither of these is for you and you want something that looks nice but is also healthy for your leopard gecko you could use reptile carpet, this way it’s safe but also gives a nice look to the setup.
Heating and Lighting
Heating for your leopard gecko is essential as they need underbelly heat to digest their food, so a heat mat must be provided underneath the substrate. A reptile thermostat must be used for the heat mat to get the perfect temperatures.
UVB lighting is not needed for leopard geckos but will not harm them.
Leopard geckos are diurnal animals which mean they are mostly active at dusk and dawn.
Food and Supplements
For baby leopard geckos we would suggest feeding them on live small mealworms or small crickets. For adults live large meal worms, Morio worms, large crickets and large locusts. Calcium powder must be sprinkled onto any food is given to your pet gecko as they can suffer from MBD (Metabolic Bone Disease) if not given to them as t/the meals they are fed do not contain any calcium which is essential, also Neurobiol is also another supplement we use which is a vitamin to keep your gecko strong and healthy.
